the Cultivamos story

We draw inspiration from the natural bounty of Portugal, and sharing it drives our mission: we’re cultivating a community of wine professionals and culinary leaders—connecting them to Portugal through wine, olive oil, people and place.

We are rooted in importing wine and olive oil, but Cultivamos (“we cultivate” in Portuguese) is more than just a name. It summarizes what we’re all about: nurturing growth, connection, curiosity and learning while always keeping the future—of our business, our people, and our planet—top of mind. Bringing people together through food and wine while supporting social and environmental sustainability is a value we communicate through our portfolio from Esporão.

The territory of Herdade do Esporão was established more than 750 years ago, when the borders of the estate were set in 1267. The contemporary reality of Esporão was born in 1973, the vision of two partners, Joaquim Bandeira and José Roquette, who shared an ambition to make the finest products that nature can provide. In 2023 the team celebrated Esporão’s first fifty years, having established itself as one of Portugal’s most enduring and beloved family companies, At Esporão, people, tradition and biodiversity are equal part of the landscape, and these fundamental values are shared across the Atlantic by Cultivamos.

The Cultivamos team enjoys sharing the myriad details that make these products so unique in the US with colleagues and onsite with visitors to Portugal, where they can show off the harmonious day-to-day rhythm at the estates and bring the culture of wine and olive oil to life. Esporão’s doors opened to guests in 1997—a pioneering endeavor in the tourism sector at the time, particularly in Alentejo. Over the years, the group’s hospitality offerings were extended to Douro, with Murças, and to Vinho Verde, with Ameal. All three estates invite you to visit, slow down, enjoy, feel, and get to know the places, people and nature behind the bottles.
